Many employee surveys include “open-ended” or “comment” questions. These questions have the advantage of allowing respondents to:
- Provide greater detail in their feedback on a topic covered by the survey
- Address an issue that was not included in the survey
- Offer concrete suggestions to address areas of opportunity to aid action planning efforts and, ultimately, lead to organizational improvement
Although they are rich sources of data, open-ended comment questions on a survey are not without some drawbacks. However, we feel that the richness of data outweighs these disadvantages and that organizations that effectively integrate written comment questions in their survey program can reap significant rewards.
