CEB Copyright and Citation Policy

CEB Inc. is a best practice insight and technology company that develops proprietary and innovative solutions to drive corporate performance. CEB Materials (as defined below) made available through our programs, products, services, public websites, or other publications and distributions are proprietary to CEB and subject to copyright and other intellectual property protections, regardless of where and how they are referenced. This policy describes permissible use of CEB Materials, when CEB consent is required, and the process for requesting such consent.

This policy applies to any entity or individual that gets access to CEB Materials. This policy also applies to any third party that writes about and/or promotes CEB Materials, including alliance partners and distributors.

CEB reserves the right to change this policy at any time, without notice. This policy is for general information purposes only, and CEB reserves the right to deny any and all uses of any of its Materials at its sole discretion.

General Requirements

CEB "Materials" include any and all documents, information, virtual learning content, research, training manuals, templates, technical reports, report formats, research data, selection, assessment and survey content (including survey or test content and scoring protocols), websites, and/or any other materials developed, owned, and/or provided by CEB or its affiliates. 

  • Materials made available through our Leadership Councils may be used in their entirety for the internal business purposes of licensed CEB clients during the applicable subscription period. In these instances, CEB clients do not require advance approval from CEB to share the Materials to employees within their organization.
    • Use of Materials made available through our Leadership Councils outside of a CEB client company requires advance, written approval by CEB.
  • Use of Materials by any third-party contractor requires advance, written approval by CEB, even if the third-party contractor services a CEB client.
  • Materials received through programs, products, or services other than Leadership Councils, are subject to the usage requirements detailed below and as set forth in the written agreement between the CEB client and CEB or a CEB affiliate.
  • Limited Materials are made available on our public websites and blogs. These Materials may be used for non-commercial purposes without advance permission from CEB, with proper citation to CEB and in accordance with the rules governing use below.

Rules Governing Use

  • CEB must be cited as the source of any Materials in accordance with the citation requirements in this policy.
  • Any commercial use of Materials or the content within any Materials is prohibited without advance, written approval by CEB.
  • Full reproduction of our Materials is prohibited. Reprints of non–publicly available Materials are available for purchase.
  • Use of our Materials must be limited in scope, and excerpts must be lifted verbatim in their entirety and appear accurately with all relevant context. Paraphrasing is not allowed.
  • Use of Materials, excerpts, and/or citations must not:
    • endorse or appear to endorse a client, product, or service;
    • be used to compare companies, products, or services; or
    • mention specific companies, products, or services.
  • Permission must be requested to use or reproduce our logo, trademarks, or service marks except as presented in the original Materials without alteration for use within a client company.

  • In general, if you are uncertain of proper citation for a particular use, please seek approval.
  • For permitted use of Materials within a client company, the CEB copyright notice must appear on each page as it originally appeared, and it may not be removed or altered.
  • For permitted use of Materials that are made available on our public websites and blogs, the copyright notice must appear on each page as it originally appeared, and it may not be removed or altered.
  • For content properly excerpted from Materials, CEB must be cited, and the citation must include the following information:
    • Research—CEB, Research Title, Year of Publication, Page Number(s) [if applicable]
    • Web Pages—CEB, Web Page Title, Date Published or Last Modified, Web Address
    • Datasets—CEB, Dataset Title, Year of Publication or Last Modified, Product Name
    • Blog Posts—CEB, Blog Post Title, Blog Post Author, Name of Blog [if applicable], Date Published or Last Modified, Blog Post Web Address
    • Video and Other Multimedia—CEB, Video Title, Date Posted [or Accessed if posting date is unavailable], Web Address
  • So long as you are consistent with the above detail, you may apply your own citation styles. For example, Chicago-style citation recommends italicizing the titles of studies and names of blogs while enclosing in quotation marks the titles of blog posts, web pages, and videos.

Requests for Permission

    • A description of the organization or individual requesting permission
    • The Materials or the content within any Materials you wish to use in context of the material where it will appear
    • The original source with excerpted content highlighted
    • A description of the audience, communication objective, and vehicle
    • The date(s) and, if applicable, venue of use
  • We will reply via e-mail within five to seven business days.
  • If you are requesting permission to cite CEB Materials or the content within any Materials in advertisements, please note the following:
    • CEB will consider advertising permission only for client companies.
    • All requests for ad-related permissions must include detail about the placement of the advertisement.

Special Requirements for Challenger™ Materials

These additional provisions apply to Challenger™ Materials distributed and licensed through our training and messaging programs on a per user basis. Challenger Materials include, but are not limited to, tangible Materials, such as training session or workshop binders and other tools and resources, and online tools, such as portals, websites, e-learning modules, interactive platforms, online assessment tools, and mobile applications.

  • The Challenger brand may not be used without CEB’s permission by any entity or individual.
  • Materials distributed and licensed on a per user basis may not be shared, copied, or otherwise distributed or displayed to any other non-licensed individual or third party, including within the client company.
  • Individual program participants may continue to use tangible Materials after the subscription period for their own personal use, but access to any online tools will be terminated at the end of the subscription period.
  • Individual program participants may not share any log-in and password information with any other individual or third party to access online Materials. Individual program participants do not require approval to use the Materials or their individual log-in and password information for individual use during the subscription period.
  • The copying, saving, or distribution of online tools or any parts thereof is prohibited.

Third-Party Use of Challenger™ Materials

CEB aggressively protects and closely monitors third-party commercial activity to protect our clients from unknowingly purchasing Challenger-branded services and/or Challenger materials from an unauthorized provider. The following uses of Challenger Materials without advance, written permission from CEB are generally prohibited by third parties:

  • Any commercial use, copying, or display of the Challenger brand or Challenger materials, graphics, or illustrations or substantially similar materials, graphics, or illustrations
  • Use of the Challenger brand or Challenger materials, graphics, or illustrations by a third-party service provider, even if the use is for “educational purposes,” without advance, written permission from CEB
  • Positioning or representation to a prospective client that services in disruptive sales, confrontational selling, or insight selling techniques are the same as or substantially similar to Challenger services
  • Display of the Challenger brand or Challenger materials, graphics, or illustrations on a third-party website or blog or any other type of marketing materials giving the appearance that CEB is affiliated with or sponsoring the third-party’s services
  • Advertisement or solicitation of the sale of Challenger services or other services to implement the Challenger selling model (including e-mail solicitations)

Request Permission to Use Challenger™ Materials

    • The Materials or the content within any Materials you wish to use in context of the material where it will appear

Customized Deliverables

  • CEB or its affiliates may create and/or provide deliverables to a client company or individual that are for the sole use of the client company or individual under the applicable agreement with CEB or a CEB affiliate (“Customized Deliverables”).
  • To the extent CEB intellectual property is included in Customized Deliverables, CEB retains exclusive ownership of its intellectual property.
  • Upon full and final payment of any applicable fees, the client company or individual will own the Customized Deliverables, subject to the following:
    • CEB shall retain exclusive ownership of all CEB intellectual property incorporated into Customized Deliverables.
    • Unless otherwise specified in a written agreement between the client company and CEB, Customized Deliverables shall be used for the company’s internal business purposes only.
  • The CEB copyright notice must continue to appear on each page as it originally appeared, and it may not be removed or altered.
  • For CEB content properly excerpted from Customized Materials, CEB must be cited, and the citation must include the following information:
    • Research—CEB, Research Title, Year of Publication, Page Number(s) [if applicable]
    • Web Pages—CEB, Web Page Title, Date Published or Last Modified, Web Address
    • Blog Posts—CEB, Blog Post Title, Blog Post Author, Name of Blog [if applicable], Date Published or Last Modified, Blog Post Web Address
    • Video and Other Multimedia—CEB, Video Title, Date Posted [or Accessed if posting date is unavailable], Web Address

Templates

Certain programs, products, or services include access to documents, tools, presentations, or templates that are specifically designed to be downloaded and edited for particular internal business purposes (collectively, “Templates”). Templates are not considered Customized Deliverables, and Templates downloaded during a subscription period may continue to be used after the end of the applicable subscription period.

CEB TowerGroup™ Copyright and Citation Policy

All CEB TowerGroupTM Research (as defined below) made available through our programs, products, services, public websites, or other publications and distributions is proprietary to CEB and subject to copyright and other intellectual property protections, regardless of where and how it is referenced. This policy describes permissible use of CEB TowerGroup Research, when CEB consent is required, and the process for requesting such consent.

This policy applies to any entity or individual that gets access to CEB TowerGroup Research. This policy also applies to any third party that writes about and/or promotes CEB TowerGroup Research, including alliance partners and distributors.

  • CEB TowerGroup Research includes any syndicated or custom research, analyst quotes, technology reports, data, industry trends, and advisory and analyst briefings.
  • CEB TowerGroup Research may be used for the internal business purposes of licensed CEB clients during the applicable subscription period. In these instances, CEB clients do not require advance approval from CEB to share CEB TowerGroup Research to employees within their organizations.
  • Use of Materials outside a CEB client company requires advance, written approval by CEB. Such uses include, but are not limited to, advertisements, press releases, and sales collateral in all types of media; SEC filings or other legal documents; and links to any websites maintained by CEB.
  • Use of Materials by any third-party contractor requires advance, written approval by CEB, even if the third-party contractor services a CEB client.
  • CEB TowerGroup Research received through programs, products, or services are subject to the usage requirements detailed below and as set forth in the written agreement between the CEB client and CEB or a CEB affiliate.
  • Limited CEB TowerGroup Research is made available on our public websites and blogs. This publicly available CEB TowerGroup Research may be used for noncommercial purposes without advance permission from CEB, with proper attribution to CEB and in accordance with the Rules Governing Use below.

  • In Press Releases:
    • All citations must comply with the Copyright and Citation Requirements.
    • CEB TowerGroup may not be referenced or appear in any client, member, or vendor boilerplates.
  • In Videos/Multimedia:
    • All citations must comply with the Copyright and Citation Requirements.
    • Citations, quotes, and excerpts from CEB TowerGroup videos and webinars that mention specific companies and/or products are prohibited.
  • In Webinars/Speaking Engagements:
    • All citations must comply with the Copyright and Citation Requirements.
    • Cosponsors may use the CEB TowerGroup name to promote webinars.
    • Citations, quotes, and excerpts from CEB TowerGroup videos and webinars that mention specific companies and/or products are prohibited.
    • It must be clear that a CEB TowerGroup analyst is a guest/featured speaker/presenter and that the event is not being cohosted or co-marketed in any way.

Additional Policies Related to Technology Assessments

  • All CEB TowerGroup citations must comply with the Copyright and Citation Requirements.
  • CEB TowerGroup Technology Assessment research is a qualitative evaluation of a set of vendors in a specific market; it is NOT a stack ranking.
  • CEB will not approve requests to use CEB TowerGroup Technology Assessment research to endorse the position of one vendor over another or to negatively endorse a competitor’s position.
  • Components of technology analysis reprints relevant to a firm’s individual solution may not be published in isolation for mass market consumption. This includes individual case studies, product ranking visuals, and feature audits.
  • Clients who have participated in a Technology Assessment may issue a press release and/or include their classification in collateral materials pending they adhere to the following guidelines:

Press Release Development

  • Clients that issue a press release based on a CEB TowerGroupTM Technology Assessment must include the following standard disclosure verbatim and in its entirety:

Report Text and Images

  • Clients May:
    • Excerpt the "CEB TowerGroup View" and/or category definitions from the Technology Assessment only if it is used verbatim and in its entirety.
  • Clients May NOT:
    • Excerpt or use the CEB Technology Assessment graphics in any form factor without advance, written approval by CEB.
    • Directly compare their numeric score or position with those of other vendors or product.

Request Permission to Use CEB TowerGroup™ Research or Quote an Analyst

  • Clients must have any press releases, campaigns, or landing pages approved by CEB’s PR Department.

To Address Copyright Violations

Pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Title 17, United States Code, Section 512(c), a copyright owner or its authorized agent ("Complainant") may submit a complaint alleging copyright infringement to CEB's Designated Agent if Complainant has a good-faith belief that its works are being infringed by material subject to CEB's control. To ensure receipt, CEB strongly recommends that Complainant send the complaint by overnight mail. CEB will investigate complaints and respond to proper notification sent to:

A proper notification MUST have at least the following information or it may be IGNORED:

  1. A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of Complainant;
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed or, if multiple copyrighted works at a single site are covered by a single notification, a representative list of such works at that site;
  3. Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to which is to be disabled, and information reasonably sufficient to permit CEB to locate the material;
  4. The Complainant's full legal name, address, telephone number, and, if available, an e-mail address at which Complainant may be contacted;
  5. A statement that Complainant has good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; and
  6. A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notification is accurate and that Complainant is authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

CEB will investigate the subject of a proper notice. If appropriate, CEB will remove or disable access to the allegedly infringing material and notify the entity that submitted such material ("Respondent").
