Investing in Data Sciences: CEB and the University of Illinois

30 March, 2016

CEB datasets now number in the billions—35 billion at last estimate. It’s a massive amount of information to stay on top of. But who’s counting, really? Well, as of last week, a group of students at the University of Illinois will be.

On March 16, 2016, CEB opened the Data Innovation Center at the University of Illinois Research Park on the Urbana-Champaign campus. This major investment in big data analytics reflects CEB’s commitment to becoming a world leader in data sciences. And this summer, a dozen students will work full time to build CEB’s first internal analytics platform.

How Data Analytics Inform Talent Management

The Center will help compile data from multiple CEB sources, similar to how an online database would work. Then CEB can share the right information back with our members—whether they need to select the right job candidate or the right region to start recruiting for their skills.

Peter Ghavami, CEB’s IT Head of Application Development and Data Analytics, explains, “We are bringing the best minds together from multidisciplinary specialties to collaboratively build the next generation of the data analytics solutions outlet. We’re also cultivating relationships with the professors in Computer Science, Statistics, Math, and Library and Information Management schools.”

Crash Course in Data Analytics

If you’ve never heard of data analytics, consider if you’ve heard of Watson, the supercomputer IBM built that won US TV game show “Jeopardy” in 2011. Watson is a data analytics tool that can understand and extract answers for even the very formally worded questions typical of Jeopardy. Can a similar data analytics platform be smart enough to help CEB answer their members’ questions.

CEB’s IT team bets so, and they are developing an even smarter data analytics platform to tackle the most challenging problems unique to CEB and its member needs. Its code name: Genie.

Analytics Support Diverse Needs Across CEB

In pursuit of this goal, the Center will add on to CEB’s already advanced analytics work by tackling emerging technologies, such as natural language processing, machine learning, and data visualization. The ultimate goal? To expand our market-leading talent analytics portfolio and help equip senior executives worldwide with precise intelligence to inform their decisions. “These are exciting times. We’re making a big investment in data science, and we’re right at the center of it, driving these innovations,” Ghavami says.
